Aurora Auroras, named after the Roman goddess of the dawn, are the result of the photon emissions in the Earth's upper atmosphere (50 miles/80 km up) from ionized nitrogen atoms regaining an electron, and oxygen and nitrogen atoms returning from an excited state to ground state.            |
